Wacie Wednesday: Slither

This week’s Wacie Wednesday post is all about Slither, a polish I made many moons ago, but am just getting around to trying out. It’s a slightly black base filled with tons and tons of gold-shifting green flakies. I’m wearing three coats of it here with a coat of Seche Vite top coat. Most photos were taken in my studio, the last two in the set were taken outdoors in full sun.

I’ll get this out of the way first: cleaning up my cuticles sucked. Because this polish is practically all flakies, it’s hard to move out of all the nooks and crannies. I spent the better part of an hour exclusively on my cuticles, and you can still see the tiny flakies all over the place. This is most evident in the outdoor shots. You can see them everywhere.

Now we can get to the good stuff. Look at the color shift! The green here is already gorgeous on its own, and then the light hits it, and everything turns gold and stunning. I love it.

You may see a piece or two of lime green glitter sticking out on a couple of nails. I don’t know where those came from, nor do I know how they got into this bottle. They are not part of this polish. I didn’t even notice them until I was taking the outdoor shots. Those will not be part of the final product when that time comes.

Wacie Wednesday: Psychovamp

I hate to admit it, but my Wacie Nail Co. experiment this week is another case of too much glitter. I just hate the sound of those words together. This is Psychovamp, a purple jelly with various sizes of red holo glitters. I’m wearing three coats (no undies) and two coats of Seche Vite.

To start with, I love the look I got. It’s a bit like the jelly sandwich I did a couple weeks ago; the deep jelly and holo glitters make it look very similar. What I don’t like, though, is that it looks completely unlike my intention. The red glitters kind of take over the purple polish, so much so that you can barely tell it’s purple. This could probably be remedied with adding less glitter; regardless of how the glitter affects the color, it needs to go anyway. You can see the stray bits of fine glitter I just couldn’t get out of my cuticle. I hate that.

The photos in the sun are a little more true to what the polish looks like away from the studio. The purple is a little more visible in the studio than anywhere else. In the sunlight, though, you can really see all the glitter and the depth from the jelly, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

Also: no offense intended for psychos and vampires. Just saying.

Wacie Wednesday: Virgo Supercluster

I forget if I wrote about this last week, but I’ve finally swatched all the Wacie Nail Co. polishes I intended for the “spring” launch. Some I really liked, some I’m rethinking, but we’ll see how it turns out when we launch for reals in June. The polish I’m wearing for Wacie Wednesday this week is something I made while I was experimenting and hasn’t made it into a collection yet. It’s called Virgo Supercluster, and I’m wearing three coats of it with two coats of Seche Vite.

Virgo Supercluster is a black jelly with various sizes of silver holo hex glitters. It dries quickly, probably because there’s more glitter in this bottle than lacquer. Since this is a jelly, you have the choice of layering it over a black polish to get a huge glitter payoff, or foregoing undies for the dimensional layers of glitter. It also dries with texture, so you can wear it like a matte textured polish, or you can wear it with top coat. It’s versatile for a black jelly. The big downside, however, is that cleanup is a nightmare. Even after the most careful of applications, I still spent a half hour trying to clean up my cuticles, and I did a crap job of it because I was trying to hurry so I could play video games. I love the way all this glitter looks, but I’m starting to think, for the first time in my life, I need to cool it on the glitter.

I like this look overall, but it could probably benefit from being reformulated. I love the way it evokes space and suspension of galaxies in the universe, but I cannot forget how long it took to clean up.

Wacie Wednesday: Dusk

This Wacie Wednesday is a little late because I had to worry about taking a final exam and worrying about making it to the bar in time for happy hour. I love my blog and I love my readers, but I love beer, too. This week, I’m wearing Dusk from Wacie Nail Company. This is three coats with two coats of top coat.

Dusk is a creamy twilight purple. Basically, I was fooling around in my polish workshop, and I challenged myself to make a purple, and this is what I came up with. The polish has a ton of sparkle, but when I applied it, it dried matte and flat on its own, giving an almost metallic appearance. The topcoat really brings out the shimmer, making it exactly as it does in the bottle. It went on pretty easily, but the formula was still thick, even after pouring lots of thinner in it. One big disadvantage to this polish was how difficult it was to clean up. I used some mica powder in it; I’m totally winging the polish mixing this here, so I don’t know if this was a no-no or not. Anyway, the problem I had was the same problem I had with Gold Rush: cleanup took twice as long because the pigment I used was immune to acetone. It’s possible, but totally ridiculous.

Dusk may be my favorite part of the day. I love watching the sky turn dark with night; it reminds me of the long walks home from the bus stop when I was a student, or more recently, when I was walking to the convenience store, counting change on my way there to make sure I had enough quarters for cat food. It’s a beautiful time of transition: the crickets start to chirp, the songbird quiet down for the night, and the smells of dinner waft from houses to the sidewalk. I wasn’t seeking to capture that when I made this, but I love that it happened.

Okay, so no Wacie Nail Co. launch this week. I think I’m aiming for June now. I’m going on vacation in mid-May and I would feel like a jerk launching a store and then going on vacation for two weeks. So hopefully, June will be the launch, and then I have the whole summer to dedicate to pouring polish. Yay.

Wacie Wednesday: Dang

It’s Wednesday, and right on schedule, we’re looking at something new from Wacie Nail Company. This is Dang, a blinding glitter topper, named for the first thing I said after I created it. I’m wearing one coat of it over The New Black’s Black, e.l.f.’s Smokin Hot, and Essie’s Aruba Blue.

Dang is another happy accident; it’s the result of mixing glitters together without intention. It’s a clear base with various sizes of holo silver hexes and holo silver hearts. Because there’s so much glitter in it, it’s impossible to not get a good glitter payoff. However, the hearts don’t come out very frequently; as you can see, I didn’t get one on every nail. It doesn’t even matter if the hearts are scarce, though. There’s tons of glitter to make up for it.

Something I like about this mixture is that it’s sparkly (to the point of blindness in the sunlight), but it’s not trying too hard for it. There’s not a ton of different shapes and colors and craziness jumping out at you for attention. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that kind of polish; those kinds of polishes are what drew me to indies in the first place. No, this is a glitter that glitters. It’s like a formal gown for your nails. Like diamond earrings for your nails. They’re your nails, but glitterier. I actually wore this to a red carpet party during awards season. My nails were dressed better than anybody.

I admit, I thought Wacie Nail Co. would have launched by now. Other projects I’m involved with are taking priority over my nail polish business, and it might be a while before I have a chance to reclaim all the time and money I’m putting into other things. My time is going to schoolwork and other entrepreneurial things; my money is all going to the vacation I’m taking next month. I’d planned eight polishes for the Wacie Nail Co. first-ever spring line, but as of right now, there are only seven; I haven’t had the time or means to save one from prototype limbo. Hopefully, there will be a launch before summer. If not, the spring line will become the summer line, which actually works out since I don’t have plans for a summer line. Either way, it will be soon. Wacie Wednesday: Summerboy

I almost didn’t do a Wacie Wednesday this week. I loved my pink gradient so much that it was really difficult to say goodbye to it. Note to self: this is why dishwashers were invented. My Wacie Nail Co. polish this week is called Summerboy. I’m wearing three coats of it with two coats of Seche Vite. Let’s check it out.

This polish is a little deceiving. It looks like a blue shimmer, but it’s actually a barely-there white jelly loaded down with turquoise blue micro-flakies. Yeah, there’s so much of it, it actually looks blue. This is yet another happy accident where putting things in bottles for fun and chuckles actually paid off. The notes I wrote for this do say “white pigment and turquoise flakies”, but there’s so much color in it that I’m doubting myself. Did I put blue in it and failed to make note of it? Did the flakies bleed? I don’t know where this color is actually coming from, but I love it. It’s vibrant and bright. It might be one of the nicest turquoise polishes I have, and I don’t say that lightly. I don’t even like to talk that way about my own polish, it makes me feel like a jerk.

Because I don’t dread going outside anymore, here’s an outdoor photo.

Wacie Nail Company is getting closer to a real launch, so watch this space all month, because it’s going to happen some time this April. I’m also thinking this is a good time to have a giveaway. I poured some minis of the spring collection for a reviewer today, and I may pour another for a soon-to-be winner. Maybe.

Wacie Wednesday: Shimmerkiss

This week’s Wacie Wednesday features a fun little experiment I’ve been calling Shimmerkiss. It’s a juicy pink crelly with pearly green microflakies. I’m wearing three coats of it as per the DIY Gel method outlined here.

I really like this, but it kinda came out weird on my nails, like even after all those layers of Gelous and Seche Vite, the flakies ate it all. It’s not shiny; it’s smooth, but satiny matte smooth The glints you see in the photos are not from top coat, but from the flakies. It’s still pretty, but next time I will definitely not use the Gelous method with this polish.

There’s way more glitter here than I thought there would be; the formula was thick and could have been easier to apply. I may end up taking this one back to the drawing board before I start making it in batches.

Wacie Thursday: Key Lime

My weekly Wacie Nail Company post got pushed back to make room for yesterday’s Model City review. It’s worth the wait. Key Lime is a full coverage glitter polish; there’s tons of neon green and iridescent glitters, dark green and light green shreds, and gold-green shifting flakies. I’m wearing two coats of it here with two coats of Seche Vite.

I love this. It’s stunning, brilliant, sparkling. The funny thing is is that it came together completely by accident. I was goofing off in my workshop, just mixing glitters at random into lacquer base, and it just happened. I shook it up, I swatched it on a test nail, and then I heard angels singing from heaven. Actually, it was probably a car full of teenagers and thumping bass, but you know where I’m going with this. This is either the happiest accident in the universe or fate brought these glitters together and put them in my hands.

Maybe I’m exaggerating, whatever. In any case, Key Lime is a gorgeous polish, and it will be available soon!

Wacie Wednesday: Gold Rush

Today I’m bringing you an interesting new blend from Wacie Nail Company. It’s called Gold Rush, and it’s part of Wacie Nail Company’s first spring collection, which will launch in April. I’m wearing three coats of it here with two coats of Seche Vite. Some of the photos were taken in low light and may be blurry, but this is intentional. Gold Rush shines best in low lighting, but looks phenomenal in any lighting condition. Note how it varies from photo to photo; I don’t think it’s the same in any two.

Okay, so Gold Rush is a white polish with boatloads of gold shimmer. In fact, the white part is only apparent in the bottle; on the nail, all you see is the bright yellow shine. In sunlight, it’s a very pale but absolutely blinding shimmer; in lower light conditions, it’s a dark yellow or gold. I don’t really know what to say about this polish, other than wow. It looks amazing in any light at any angle. One thing I feel like I should mention, though, is that it doesn’t seem to come off easily; cleaning up around my cuticles took a lot of time and effort, way more than any other polish. You can even still see some of the gold shimmer stuck on my skin. I tried like hell to get it all off, and I still missed some. This almost makes me want to rethink putting it in the collection at all, but it’s such an amazing color that the extra work is worth it.

As I mentioned, Wacie’s Spring Collection is launching next month, so you’ll be able to grab it then. I don’t feel like I did this polish much justice, and that it’s something you have to see in person to believe. It’s the most unique thing I’ve made so far.

Wacie Wednesday: Deli-Style

While Wacie Wednesday is usually reserved for promoting new Wacie Nail Company products, I’ve decided to share a nail fail this week instead. Deli-Style is a product I promise to never unleash on the public. Except for right now.

Deli-Style is a yellow jelly with fine iridescent glitter and metallic gold dots. It’s the failed result of an attempt at a beer-inspired polish. I was trying to make something that captured the fizzy, wheaty appearance of hefeweizen. Instead I got something that looks like it was meant to be squirted onto a sandwich.

It’s actually not that bad in some lighting. In my office, it looks a bit more like a lemon yellow than a mustard relish. I was actually thinking of renaming it until I went into the studio and saw them under the softbox. It’s still as gross as ever. If there’s anyone who would actually want this polish for themselves, I’d happily make it for you, but I’d also be concerned.
