Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s I Wished For You, Too

Swatch Saturday is here again! It’s the first one for almost a month. My swatch today is Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s I Wished For You, Too, the last polish in the Practical Magic Halloween collection. After this polish, we move onto the next phase of the BEGL Doctor Who collection! I’m wearing three coats of I Wished For You, Too with one coat of Seche Vite top coat.

I Wished For You, Too is a deep purple with orange and green shimmers. Application was very good; the color is deep and well-pigmented from the first coat, and the shimmers are very well distributed. There was only some slight streaking on the first coat, and was completely opaque by the second. The polish dries quickly and with a satin finish.

Like the others in this collection, I Wished For You, Too is subtly Halloweeny. This polish may be the most subtle of them all. The base is vampy and dark; the purple looks navy in some lighting conditions, and the shimmers just whisper Halloween. You’d never know this was a holiday polish if you encountered it in, say, June. I’ve mentioned this in every post in this series, but every time, it’s true: BEGL makes the best holiday polishes because they do not resemble holiday polishes.

The following photos were taken in direct sunlight! This is where the purple is its purplest, and the shimmers stand out the best.

Hawaiian Beauty Haul!

Hey guys! Today’s post is something new, because I don’t typically post about things I bought and haven’t used yet. However, because I didn’t post for two weeks, I feel like I need to make up for the time I took off. Also, because all these products are locally made in Hawaii, they’re new and exciting to me, and I want to tell you about them, too! These are all the beauty goods I bought while I was on vacation.

First I’ll talk about Island Girl nail polish. This was the one product I knew I’d be buying ahead of time, because I’ve seen so many other people on the nail polish internet wearing it. It’s also the only one of these you can buy on the mainland, as ABC Stores, the carrier of Island Girl, also has stores in Las Vegas. I won’t talk too much about these, since these are pretty popular items, and I’ll be swatching one this weekend for Swatch Sunday.

The teal is called Aloha Paradise, and the neon pink is called Mahalo Color. The three glitters came in a three-pack and, for some reason, are missing their shade labels.

I bought the polishes on the last day of my trip, but I bought this cuticle oil at the beginning because my cuticles looked like garbage around day two. I liked that it came in a large one ounce bottle, and the colorful little flowers in it. The scent is strong, floral and fruity. The oil itself is a blend of mineral and safflower oils, and may not be the most nourishing oil blend, but it really saved my cuticles while I was travelling. And it’s so cute!

I also bought these solid lotions to use as cuticle balms, but they got buried in the shopping bags and I didn’t get to them until I was home. I’ve only opened the plumeria one; you can see the aloe one is still sealed along the edges. It was left in the hot Hawaiian car for most of the trip, and so it melted and can’t be removed from the tin easily, so I’ve just been digging in with my finger. It works really well as a cuticle balm; it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave shine and grease behind. The scent is strong but very natural-smelling.

I haven’t used any of these soaps yet, but they smell so delicious that I’ll probably open them up soon. All three of the Indigenous soaps have very earthy scents, scents like patchouli, ginger, and camphor. They’re all recently made, too, as each bar has a “born on” date stamped on the label. The very natural ingredients list is something to behold as well.

I didn’t even want to buy this guava glycerine soap. I knocked it off a display, and when I picked it up, it was dented and I felt like a jerk just putting it back. The presentation of this soap is beauitful, though; the raffia ribbon and cowrie shells really say “Hey, I came from Hawaii”, probably moreso than any of the other things I bought. The scent is citrusy and floral (pikake is a jasmine variant).

More soaps! These are from Garden Isle Bath and Body, based in Kapa’a, Kauai. I haven’t used these yet, but they smell amazing!

These lotions, also from Garden Isle, are the real reason I ended up buying the soaps. I actually just wandered into the store to kill time before a kayaking trip, but I saw the after sun creams and bought a few, expecting to have an epic sunburn by the time the kayaking was over. I didn’t, thankfully, but now I’ve got some really nice creams. These were on the pricy side — $6 for the lotion tubes, $10 for the after sun jars — but the quality seems high. They’re very fragrant and very moisturizing, as well as handmade.

Manicure Monday: Post-Vacation Drama

Happy Monday, dudes! It’s actually Tuesday where I am, and I’m just getting around to posting this because I spent my Monday partying for Memorial Day. I’m finally back from Hawaii, and this is the first mani I’ve done since I got back. It feels good to be back at my mani station; I’ve felt like half a person without having polish on for the past week. Do my hands look tanner? I shopped a lot in Hawaii, so I might do a Hawaiian beauty haul post in a bit, as well as some Island Girl polish swatches. Keep an eye out for those!

Anyway, this post-vacation look was done with Sonia Kashuk’s Smoke and Mirrors and Digital Nails‘s So Sparkle.

Smoke and Mirrors is a classic shimmer silver polish. This shade has been around forever and every brand has one. I even remember my mother rocking this silver back in the day. It’s shimmery, sparkly, and foil-like; it’s not as foily as something like Essie’s No Place Like Chrome, but it’s still very reflective. This polish is one that shows brush strokes pretty prominiently, and I can’t really see them in this one, which is really nice.

So Sparkly is amazing, and is easily the star of this manicure. Someone at my cookout today it looked like dreamy space glitter, and that’s the best way I can describe this polish. It’s got a teal to purple shift, red and blue glitters, silver flakies, and a holo effect throughout, though I can’t tell if it’s Spectraflair or fine holo glitters. I’ve been staring at my polish all day, and mostly the two with So Sparkle on. This polish is dramatic and gorgeous and everyone should have it.

I put the two together because I wanted a simple metallic look to help me ease back into my manicure and blogging routines. I thought about adding the usual 3D elements and opted not to. I didn’t want to do anything very complicated today, what with holiday barbecues and swimming, and I’m still pretty jet-lagged. I also have other things I need to do today. Like unpack.

Manicure Monday: Minty Fresh and Clean

Happy Monday, reader! Today’s look is a pretty simple one. I had a nail break — my nails were already pretty short — so I felt a simple look was best for nails this short. Today’s look was done with a vintage Maybelline mystery color, Lynnderella‘s The Full Minty, and rhinestones.

As you can see, this Maybelline polish is at least ten years old. That’s as long as I’ve had it, anyway. I don’t know anything about it; its name and other labels got peeled off, leaving its identity lost forever. It’s a really nice polish besides being old; it’s a warm nude with a subtle shimmer, it dries pretty quickly, and application was easy, even though I remember one of the last times I used it the brush dropped a strand in the wet polish. I’m always impressed by how long a polish can live.

I never know what to pair nude polishes with. Nudes are a great base for anything, and I couldn’t decide what to use with it, so what I did this week was pick a random Helmer drawer, shut my eyes, and grabbed a polish out. It was this one, Lynnderella’s The Full Minty. This was one of the first Lynnderellas I ever bought, and I’ve had it at least a year now, so I’m happy to be trying it out. At first I wasn’t sure about it; I thought the green would overwhelm the nude, and it kind of does, but I like it. The rhinestones, the final afterthought, pulls it together.

In the sun, this is really nice; you can see the full variety of glitters in The Fully Minty, as well as the subtle nude shimmer in the base.

As the Maybelline mystery color is old and likely discontinued, I can’t offer any buying notes for it. The Fully Minty and other Lynnderella polishes are available on both eBay and Storenvy. My rhinestones are from Amazon.

Swatch Sunday: Rainbow Honey’s Sakura Matsuri

Happy Sunday! It’s been a great weekend so far! My swatch this Sunday is Sakura Matsuri from Rainbow Honey; I’m wearing one coat of Sakura Matsuri over Essie’s Mint Candy Apple (blue), Ciaté’s Candy Floss (pink), and OPI’s Dutch Tulips (red), as well as a coat of Seche Vite top coat.

Sakura Matsuri is a clear-based glitter topper with pink matte, red metallic, iridescents in blue and green, and pink and white flower-shaped glitters. Application was okay; it was sometimes hard to get the flower glitters, and when I did, I’d get tons of them, as well as a lot of lacquer on the brush. It was difficult to apply to the smaller nails, and took quite some time to dry. The glitter still had a bit of texture when dried, so I used top coat.

This is my first Rainbow Honey polish, and I think it’s adorable. I think it’s pretty unique as far as toppers go, since the flowers are the main focus of the concept, and quite a literal execution with the flower glitters. The polish is fairly monochromatic; the glitters all stay within very light shades of pink. The red accent glitters add sparkle, and the iridescent glitters add dimension. The flower glitters are always the focus of the look, and the other glitters don’t detract from it.

In the sun, you can see how the colors vary, and you can see the definition of the glitters best. You can also see how the glitter smudged the red polish. I actually didn’t notice this until I was processing these photos.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Belladonna

Happy Saturday! My Saturday swatch this week is Belldonna from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer. This polish was a limited edition gift-with-purchase that was only available if you bought the whole What Wouldn’t I Do collection as a set. I’m wearing Belladonna over China Glaze’s Pelican Gray, Ciaté’s Electronica (pink), and Essie’s I’m Addicted (blue) and with one coat of Seche Vite top coat.

Belladonna is a clear-based glitter topper; the colors are primarily white and black with noen blue, green, pink, and yellow. Shapes include stars, flowers, bows, squares, and diamonds. Application was good; it was a bit tricky to spread the glitter evenly, because there’s just so much of it. While this means you can get too much glitter, it’s not very hard to get the bigger shapes. The product consistency was smooth and easy to manipulate with the brush. The polish dries quickly and with a bit of texture. I used top coat for smoothness.

I like Belladonna. I like the toppers that are largely white glitters with some color scattered in. The white means it can be worn over pretty much anything, and the small bits of color ensure you get a fun look. This does feel a bit like a take on the black and white glitter fad from a few years ago, but the range of added shapes and colors keep it fresh and current.

These photos were taken in direct sunlight. There’s no shimmer in this base, so there’s nothing that really comes to life in the sunshine. I took a ton of macros, though, so you can really see the variety of glitters.

Manicure Monday: Whack With Poo Brain

Happy Monday! I did a simple look with a fun polish this week. This is Whack With Poo Brain from Digital Nails; I’m wearing three coats with one coat of Seche Vite and the Infinity Loop Bow from Daily Charme.

When Whack With Poo Brain was released, it was one of a special edition polish duo. Poo Brain and its sister polish, Ellagee’s Chronic Badass. The duo was created to raise awareness for fibromyalgia and other chronic illnesses. May 12 is actually Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, and I’ve been planning to wear this polish for like a year, so that’s kind of lucky.

I love this polish because it’s just quirky enough. The milky purple crelly is a beautiful color, and the glitter just adds personality. Of course, in true Digital Nails fasion, this polish was inspired in part by Adventure Time and its whimsical silliness, and I feel like that really comes through in the glitter. It’s not an ostentatious mix; the colors are basic, the iridescence gives it a little sparkle, and the circle and square shapes make it fun. It’s cute. That’s really the best word. Cute.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Amas Veritas Spell

Happy Saturday! This week we’re looking at another selection from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s 2014 What Wouldn’t I Do? collection. This is Amas Veritas Spell; I’m wearing three coats with one coat of Seche Vite top coat.

Amas Veritas Spell is an emerald jelly with green-to-blue shifting iridescent glitters. Application with this polish was very easy; the first coat of this polish had great color and coverage, and it just got better with additional coats. Indoors, the jelly seems dark enough to be opaque; though the glitter does shine nicely through, it’s a bit muted. The full jelly depth is visible outdoors in full sun; see photos. The shift occurs in any lighting conditions, through brighter ones return a better shift. The polish dries quickly and with a smooth satin finish; I used top coat for shine and to emphasize the glitter.

I think I have to say this polish is my favorite from the collection. It doesn’t look like much in the bottle, but on the nail, it’s unexpectedly stunning. The jelly, though translucent, is still deep and rich. The glitter sparkles beautifully, and the color shift is bonus, really. There’s so much dimension and depth and sparkle, it’s kind of hard to take it all in and really appreciate it. My camera struggled a bit with that, as you can see. I don’t feel like I did this polish justice at all.

In the sunlight, you can really see the jelly depth and glitter definition a bit better. I think the shift occurs better in sunlight, but it looks great nevertheless.

Manicure Monday: Cool Raspberry Swirl With Sprinkles

Happy Monday, reader! Today’s look was done because I realized I don’t do watermarbles as often as I should. I used Sinful Colors’s Timbleberry (pink) as the base, Essie’s I’m Addicted (darker blue) and Mint Candy Apple (lighter blue) in the marble, and Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer Prototype PCFS 1.0 as the glitter accent.

In a future post, you’ll read about the lack of watermarbling on the blog; basically, when I plan a mani, I’m thinking about what glitters will pair best with cremes, and other cremes are rarely considered. The fact is, I love watermarbling, and sometimes it’s just so hard to find a cool color combination, and also formulas that lend themselves to the process; nothing’s worse than discovering a polish doesn’t spread over the water and knowing I’ve wasted polish. I’d been planning to use Timbleberry for a while, and I had a Lynnderella topper set aside for it. At the last minute, I decided that I was going to watermarble instead.

Mint Candy Apple and I’m Addicted were chosen because they just happened to be on my desk. I have them set aside for swatching some glitter toppers in the future. I saw them alongside Timbleberry and thought “Why not?”. The final outcome looks a little like a rocket pop, and more than a little like toothpaste, but I’m really happy with how it came out. My top coat smudged it a bit, but this is barely visible in real life.

The glitter was the very last piece the look needed, and to me, it brings the whole thing together. I couldn’t stand the thought of not using any glitter, so I picked this one. The colors aren’t a spot-on match, but it’s pretty close. Overall, I think this ended up being a pretty cool look; you’ve got the bright-but-not-totally-neon bright pink, the cool blues, and a tiny bit of sparkle. I also lucked out having the bow be the exact same color as the blue in the mani.

Outdoor photo time! There’s no large difference among the colors here, but I got some okay macros. Try to see past the smudges. I also got a photo of a nail on my right hand; I always get the best swirls on the nails on the other side of the camera.

Swatch Sunday: Pretty & Polished’s Pretty Chameleon

It’s another Swatch Sunday! I get to show you a thermal this week and I’m super excited. Pretty Chameleon from Pretty & Polished has been on the blog before, but never on its own. I’m wearing three coats of Pretty Chameleon with one coat of Seche Vite top coat.

Pretty Chameleon is a pink thermal polish with fine pink and blue glitters. Application was good; the product formula was very easy to work with, and I achieved full opacity in two coats. The colors change with the temperature of the polish; the pink is deep when cold and pale when warm. The glitters, though sparse, get lost in the creme; most of it just looks like blue dots with very little sparkle. It dries quickly and with a satin finish; I used top coat for extra shine.

Pretty Chameleon is one of the first indie polishes I ever bought — the eleventh, to be exact, and my second thermal — and it’s always been a polish I’ve loved. Thermals were new to me back then, and being pink made it all the better. I think the color difference was a big stronger when I first got it, but that tends to happen with thermals as they age. I’m surprised this one still changes at all, given it’s three years old. Also, because it’s hot in the house as well as outside, it was difficult to keep the cool effect long enough to get photos of it. As soon as I pulled it out of the ice water, it warmed right back up again.

These photos were taken in direct sunlight outdoors. I used pool water to effect the temperature change. It heated back up almost immediately.
