Review: Selections from Model City’s Upcoming Spring Collection

Today is an exciting day, because I’m sharing with you two brand new polishes from Model City’s upcoming spring collection. I’m super-thrilled to have the privilege to share them with you before they officially launch on March 22. These polishes were supplied by Model City Polish, but that doesn’t affect or influence my opinion on them at all. Having said that, let’s check it out.

The pearly pink-lilac I’m wearing here is called Fairy Godmother. I’m wearing three coats of it with one coat of Seche Vite. It is a light, innocent, unassuming color until you see this intense pink shine. I’m somewhat afraid I didn’t do it justice, because it’s much stronger than it appears to be in the photos. It is absolutely beautiful. As for the formula, it applies evenly; I could have gotten away with two coats. It dries very quickly. I have zero complaints with Fairy Godmother. It could not be a better polish.

Awaken to Spring is a clear glitter topper with lots of twinkling blue holographic glitter, metallic copper and brown hexes, and pink dots. I’m wearing one heavy-handed coat of it over Fairy Godmother. The consistency is similar to Fairy Godmother’s; it also dries quickly, and the glitter goes on smoothly and easily. This melange of glitter is all sparkle. These two colors complement each other very well, but I stole that deep pink luster from Fairy Godmother when I put the glitter over it.

Overall, I am totally blown away by these polishes. They are sweet and cheerful colors, evocative of the beauty of springtime. Admittedly, these are the only two from the collection I’ve seen. I cannot wait to see the rest! Again, these will be available on March 22 from Model City Polish. Model City is also now taking international orders, so now everyone around the world can get in on this gorgeous set of polishes. Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Custom Gin and Tonic

I’m sharing with you today one of the most unique polishes in my collection. At some point, perhaps intoxicated, I thought that a nail polish mimicking the crisp, bubbly appearance of gin and tonic would be a really cool thing to have. I thought about making it myself, but it would be many months before I started blending my own polishes, so I commissioned a custom polish from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer. I don’t think it could have come out any better. I’m wearing two coats of Gin and Tonic over L’oreal’s Broadway Boogie and The New Black’s Black, as well as two coats of Seche Vite.

Gin and Tonic is a glitter topper with loads of iridescent glitter, white dots in large and small sizes, and green crescent moons. The combination really does evoke the effervesence of the cocktail. I forget whose idea the moons as limes was, but it was totally genius.

I’ve worn this before over nudes, but I wanted to try over black this time, just to see what it looked like. I’m not liking it as much. The iridescent glitters look awesome on the black, but the moon limes get lost. Besides, the iridescents aren’t really the point anyway. They’re meant to add a little something extra to the nail without totally taking it over. I guess this means it’s not as versatile as it could be, but it suits my purpose and my tastes well enough. The only problem with it is that it makes me wish I was drinking a gin and tonic.

Wacie Wednesday: Gold Rush

Today I’m bringing you an interesting new blend from Wacie Nail Company. It’s called Gold Rush, and it’s part of Wacie Nail Company’s first spring collection, which will launch in April. I’m wearing three coats of it here with two coats of Seche Vite. Some of the photos were taken in low light and may be blurry, but this is intentional. Gold Rush shines best in low lighting, but looks phenomenal in any lighting condition. Note how it varies from photo to photo; I don’t think it’s the same in any two.

Okay, so Gold Rush is a white polish with boatloads of gold shimmer. In fact, the white part is only apparent in the bottle; on the nail, all you see is the bright yellow shine. In sunlight, it’s a very pale but absolutely blinding shimmer; in lower light conditions, it’s a dark yellow or gold. I don’t really know what to say about this polish, other than wow. It looks amazing in any light at any angle. One thing I feel like I should mention, though, is that it doesn’t seem to come off easily; cleaning up around my cuticles took a lot of time and effort, way more than any other polish. You can even still see some of the gold shimmer stuck on my skin. I tried like hell to get it all off, and I still missed some. This almost makes me want to rethink putting it in the collection at all, but it’s such an amazing color that the extra work is worth it.

As I mentioned, Wacie’s Spring Collection is launching next month, so you’ll be able to grab it then. I don’t feel like I did this polish much justice, and that it’s something you have to see in person to believe. It’s the most unique thing I’ve made so far.

Manicure Monday: Neutrals and Glitter

This week’s Manicure Monday is a masterpiece. No really, I am way too excited about how this turned out. I had my doubts about pairing these two polishes, but they look so fantastic together that I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner. We’re looking at Sally Hansen’s Natural Sienna and Digital Nails’s Xiao Mei Mei. I have on two coats of each, topped by two coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Natural Sienna is a shimmery, chocolatey brown that I like a lot more than I thought I would. I always skip over browns and neutrals because they’re not bold enough for me. I grabbed this one out of a sale bin thinking “Meh, why not”, and I like it a lot. The formula is thin but covers well. My only complaint here is the brush; it’s one of those wide brushes that’s almost as wide as my whole nail, and I tend to make a mess with those. Otherwise, this one is totally worth the two dollars I paid for it.

Digital Nails’s Xiao Mei Mei kind of steals the show here. Xiao Mei Mei is a nude crelly with orange, pink, and brown glitters. As you can see, it’s very sheer; my nail line is visible if you’re looking for it. I don’t even care about that. What I love about this is its simplicity; there’s just enough color to support the glitter, and it never detracts from it. Bonus: the nude would be my perfect nude if it didn’t have any glitter in it. It blends perfectly with my natural nail color.

My favorite thing, though, is how well these colors pair. The neutrals, the deep colors, the glitters, they all complement each other so well. Totally gorgeous.

I didn’t see Natural Sienna on Sally Hansen’s website, so it may be discontinued. However, Digital Nails has Xiao Mei Mei in stock, so grab it while you can.

Swatch Saturday: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Weary Traveler

For the real Swatch Saturday, I’m wearing Weary Traveler, the last stop on the round-bottle discontinued BEGL trolley. Either this one or Eleanor were the first BEGLs I ever wore, so those are my favorites from this batch. I’m wearing three coats of it with two coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Weary Traveler is a black jelly with pink shimmer, teal holo hexes, and crescent moons in green and holographic silver. Like I said before, this was one of my first experiences with the BEGL brand, and with indie polishes in general. It’s definitely my first polish with moon-shaped glitter, which was probably the reason I bought it to start with. This is a winning combination for me: deep colors, tons of glitter, tons of shine. It can’t be beat.

It’s been fun going through all these old polishes. I have so many now that I wonder if I’ll ever get to revisit them. I guess this is the downside to having so many untrieds; I’ll try them, put them away, and then what? I may never use them again. I’ve been seeing a lot of blog sales and destashes lately, and I always think “Who the crap would want to sell off their pretties?” I’m starting to understand.

Swatch Thursday?: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Eleanor

I don’t normally post on Thursdays, but yesterday’s uggos didn’t stay on for very long, so I decided to swatch a BEGL favorite, Eleanor. Eleanor is a black jelly packed with pink, blue, purple, and aqua glitters. I’m wearing three coats with two coats of Seche Vite.

Eleanor is just gorgeous. It’s everything I could want in a jelly: it’s shiny, it’s squishy, it’s loaded down with beautiful glitters. I just don’t know what else I can say. It’s beautiful and I love it.

Like the other BEGLs I’ve shared so far, Eleanor is also, unfortunately, discontinued. I’m so backed up on my BEGL collection that everything I’m reviewing is discontinued. I’m almost out of the round-bottle BEGLs, at least.

Wacie Wednesday: Deli-Style

While Wacie Wednesday is usually reserved for promoting new Wacie Nail Company products, I’ve decided to share a nail fail this week instead. Deli-Style is a product I promise to never unleash on the public. Except for right now.

Deli-Style is a yellow jelly with fine iridescent glitter and metallic gold dots. It’s the failed result of an attempt at a beer-inspired polish. I was trying to make something that captured the fizzy, wheaty appearance of hefeweizen. Instead I got something that looks like it was meant to be squirted onto a sandwich.

It’s actually not that bad in some lighting. In my office, it looks a bit more like a lemon yellow than a mustard relish. I was actually thinking of renaming it until I went into the studio and saw them under the softbox. It’s still as gross as ever. If there’s anyone who would actually want this polish for themselves, I’d happily make it for you, but I’d also be concerned.

Swatch Saturday: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s First Frost

Today’s swatch is yet another Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer, but it’s one I love a lot. First Frost is a white jelly/crelly with tons of blue, silver, and gunmetal gray glitters. I’m wearing three coats of it with three coats of top coat.

I really do adore this polish. There are so many beautiful glitters, but it’s such a soft look. Given the translucence of the jelly, this almost looks kind of pink on me (it’s more evident in person, I think), but it’s totally not. It’s my nail. While I work from home and have a skewed idea of what’s work-appropriate, I’d say this one is. It’s pretty and glittery, but it can’t be seen from the other side of the room. The name is also evocative of gray skies and light, fluffy snowfalls, the wintry smell of the air and the crush of frozen ground underneath one’s boots; these are things that, as a Floridian, I know absolutely nothing about.

These were really hard to clean up, and as you can see, I did a horrible job. I tried getting the fine glitters away from my cuticle, but I ended up just making my cuticles dry and sad. I’m kind of embarrassed to post them like this, but the polish looks so awesome I almost don’t even care.

Sadly, First Frost has been discontinued, but there are some similar white crellies in the BEGL store. One of them is a discontinued limited edition that’s on sale, you may want to get on that before it’s gone.

Wacie Wednesday: White Noise

This week on Wacie Wednesday, we’re taking the black and white glitter topper a little farther. I told you I would. White Noise is the newest Wacie Nail Company polish; I’m wearing two coats of it over China Glaze’s Recycle and For Audrey, and Essie’s Check-Up.

White Noise is a glitter topper with black and white shreds and tiny gray hexes. It was designed to evoke an earlier time in technology, a time when you were more likely to encounter it on your TV instead of the black, quiet HDMI mode screen. Originally called “Static”, it was inspired by the sound that greeted us after we turned off the Nintendo to change games. It was sometimes alarmingly loud, always unpleasant to hear. Despite that, turning off the Nintendo to change games and hearing silence isn’t the same.

As you can see, I went a little overboard with the glitter. I probably didn’t need two coats of it, because it covered up the color more than I wanted it to. I believe that’s a fault in my application, not the polish. I wanted to demonstrate the versatility of it by putting it over the light blue and pink. It looks right at home over gray, but it can do so much more over other colors. I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

I’m still looking at labelling samples, and then I’ll start figuring out shipping logistics. I hope that if you like White Noise or some of the other Wacie Nail shades, you’ll be able to purchase them soon.

Swatch Saturday: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Team Zissou

My swatch this weekend is one of my favorite Blue Eyed Girl Lacquers, the limited edition Team Zissou! I’ve been really excited about this one since I bought it half a year ago. I’m wearing three coats (no undies) of it here with three coats of Seche Vite.

Team Zissou, inspired by Wes Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (incidentally, this is one of my favorite movies), is a milky sheer white base with a faint shimmer, red, white and blue hexes and squares, and blue hearts. When I discovered BEGL, I think I’d seen the movie like a week before, and I was still kind of high on it. I don’t think I even saw a swatch of it; I saw the name and “blue hearts” and I was sold.

I usually like polishes with a bit more glitter, and over the top looks in general, but I think there’s something to be said for this polish’s simplicity. With the absence of a boatload of glitter, the few that are there stand out. The hearts are the star of the show, and the small hexes and squares complement them. It’s a really nice look.

I’m so glad I finally got the chance to wear this. I hate myself for not putting it on sooner.
