Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer Custom Walk Through the Tulips

I am really excited to show you my weekend swatch. Walk Through the Tulips is a custom I ordered from Blue -Eyed Girl Lacquer; I was wearing First Frost some day several months ago and thought “I wonder what you look like in pink”. While I was warned it would not be an exact dupe of First Frost, I don’t think it could have gotten any closer. I am so pleased with this. I’m wearing three coats of it (no undies) with two coats of Seche Vite.

Walk Through the Tulips is a white crelly with various shades, shapes, and sizes of pink glitters. I adore it. I don’t even know what else to say. It has everything I love: pink, glitter, pink glitter. I like the dimension created by the layers of glitter. I don’t think I’ll ever get over these white crelly polishes. They always turn out so nicely.

As I said, I ordered this as a custom polish, so I don’t know how many are floating around out there aside from this bottle. BEGL does accept custom orders, so order your own or something else.

Wacie Wednesday: Gold Rush

Today I’m bringing you an interesting new blend from Wacie Nail Company. It’s called Gold Rush, and it’s part of Wacie Nail Company’s first spring collection, which will launch in April. I’m wearing three coats of it here with two coats of Seche Vite. Some of the photos were taken in low light and may be blurry, but this is intentional. Gold Rush shines best in low lighting, but looks phenomenal in any lighting condition. Note how it varies from photo to photo; I don’t think it’s the same in any two.

Okay, so Gold Rush is a white polish with boatloads of gold shimmer. In fact, the white part is only apparent in the bottle; on the nail, all you see is the bright yellow shine. In sunlight, it’s a very pale but absolutely blinding shimmer; in lower light conditions, it’s a dark yellow or gold. I don’t really know what to say about this polish, other than wow. It looks amazing in any light at any angle. One thing I feel like I should mention, though, is that it doesn’t seem to come off easily; cleaning up around my cuticles took a lot of time and effort, way more than any other polish. You can even still see some of the gold shimmer stuck on my skin. I tried like hell to get it all off, and I still missed some. This almost makes me want to rethink putting it in the collection at all, but it’s such an amazing color that the extra work is worth it.

As I mentioned, Wacie’s Spring Collection is launching next month, so you’ll be able to grab it then. I don’t feel like I did this polish much justice, and that it’s something you have to see in person to believe. It’s the most unique thing I’ve made so far.

Manicure Monday: It’s a Trap-eze!

For this week’s Mani Monday, I’m wearing one of my most loved polishes, China Glaze’s It’s a Trap-eze!. A nail friend peer-pressured me into buying it, and I have not regretted it once. This is the first time I’ve ever worn it on its own; you may remember it from this bad mani I did almost a year ago. This is a gorgeous polish in the bottle, but I was totally unprepared for how it came out on my nails.

It’s a Trap-eze! is a white jelly loaded down with metallic rainbow glitters. I’m wearing three coats of it here, but I could have gotten away with two. As it dries, the glitter makes it textured and gritty; I put down three coats of Seche Vite, and it’s still a little bumpy. Also, cleanup was a bit of a pain; I didn’t get my cuticles as clean as I wanted them, but I’m lucky to have done this well.

This polish is just unbelievable. Look at that glitter! I am completely hypnotized by it. Whenever I happen to look down at my hands, I end up staring. Also, it’s always amazing how the macro setting on my camera picks up the individual shapes of the glitters. Man. It’s unbelievable.

Swatch Saturday: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s First Frost

Today’s swatch is yet another Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer, but it’s one I love a lot. First Frost is a white jelly/crelly with tons of blue, silver, and gunmetal gray glitters. I’m wearing three coats of it with three coats of top coat.

I really do adore this polish. There are so many beautiful glitters, but it’s such a soft look. Given the translucence of the jelly, this almost looks kind of pink on me (it’s more evident in person, I think), but it’s totally not. It’s my nail. While I work from home and have a skewed idea of what’s work-appropriate, I’d say this one is. It’s pretty and glittery, but it can’t be seen from the other side of the room. The name is also evocative of gray skies and light, fluffy snowfalls, the wintry smell of the air and the crush of frozen ground underneath one’s boots; these are things that, as a Floridian, I know absolutely nothing about.

These were really hard to clean up, and as you can see, I did a horrible job. I tried getting the fine glitters away from my cuticle, but I ended up just making my cuticles dry and sad. I’m kind of embarrassed to post them like this, but the polish looks so awesome I almost don’t even care.

Sadly, First Frost has been discontinued, but there are some similar white crellies in the BEGL store. One of them is a discontinued limited edition that’s on sale, you may want to get on that before it’s gone.

Wacie Wednesday: White Noise

This week on Wacie Wednesday, we’re taking the black and white glitter topper a little farther. I told you I would. White Noise is the newest Wacie Nail Company polish; I’m wearing two coats of it over China Glaze’s Recycle and For Audrey, and Essie’s Check-Up.

White Noise is a glitter topper with black and white shreds and tiny gray hexes. It was designed to evoke an earlier time in technology, a time when you were more likely to encounter it on your TV instead of the black, quiet HDMI mode screen. Originally called “Static”, it was inspired by the sound that greeted us after we turned off the Nintendo to change games. It was sometimes alarmingly loud, always unpleasant to hear. Despite that, turning off the Nintendo to change games and hearing silence isn’t the same.

As you can see, I went a little overboard with the glitter. I probably didn’t need two coats of it, because it covered up the color more than I wanted it to. I believe that’s a fault in my application, not the polish. I wanted to demonstrate the versatility of it by putting it over the light blue and pink. It looks right at home over gray, but it can do so much more over other colors. I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

I’m still looking at labelling samples, and then I’ll start figuring out shipping logistics. I hope that if you like White Noise or some of the other Wacie Nail shades, you’ll be able to purchase them soon.

Manicure Monday: Orange and Monochrome Glitter

Today’s mani combines two of my favorite things: orange and glitter chaos.

I have on this week Courtney Orange from Sinful Colors, an orange with gold shimmer. I like orange polishes in general, but I like this one in particular; the golden aura gives it so much more. I’m wearing two coats of it here. I’m also wearing two coats of Sally Hansen’s Strobe Flash. I know I’m late to the black and white glitter party (again), but this is a look I still like, even if it’s a bit passe.

This is a look I’m not likely to get tired of. I love glitter, and I love how unpredictably this glitter applies and spreads. I just feel kind of bad that I covered up such a beautiful color.

Anyway, look forward to more of this sort of thing. I made my own take on the black and white glitter polish, as well as others with more color. I’m not letting this trend go away so easily.

Swatch Saturday: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Team Zissou

My swatch this weekend is one of my favorite Blue Eyed Girl Lacquers, the limited edition Team Zissou! I’ve been really excited about this one since I bought it half a year ago. I’m wearing three coats (no undies) of it here with three coats of Seche Vite.

Team Zissou, inspired by Wes Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (incidentally, this is one of my favorite movies), is a milky sheer white base with a faint shimmer, red, white and blue hexes and squares, and blue hearts. When I discovered BEGL, I think I’d seen the movie like a week before, and I was still kind of high on it. I don’t think I even saw a swatch of it; I saw the name and “blue hearts” and I was sold.

I usually like polishes with a bit more glitter, and over the top looks in general, but I think there’s something to be said for this polish’s simplicity. With the absence of a boatload of glitter, the few that are there stand out. The hearts are the star of the show, and the small hexes and squares complement them. It’s a really nice look.

I’m so glad I finally got the chance to wear this. I hate myself for not putting it on sooner.

Swatch Saturday: Black Bird’s Only You

Here’s a polish I’ve wanted to review for a long time. This is a polish I got in a Reddit gift exchange exclusively for makeup and nail polish. My gifter was in Germany, and she sent me a a lot of good German cosmetics. Now I’ve developed a taste for it and I can’t get it in America. Surely this is what hell is like. It’s probably no surprise that I’ve wanted to review this one for a long time. Here it is, finally, in three coats, topped with three coats of Seche Vite.

Black Bird’s Only You is a cool blue creme. I think it’s what Neptune would have looked like if it had just a bit more pigment. The formula is a little on the thin side, but still easy to use and apply. The color goes on evenly and covers well; I used three coats, but I could have gotten away with two. It has a shiny finish when dry, but I’m worried about the wear. This may just have to do with my nails not being long enough to wrap the tips, but I didn’t expect to see worn-down tips this soon after putting it on. Maybe it’s top coat shrinkage. I don’t know. I’m kind of embarrassed to post them like this, but not embarrassed enough to redo them.

Verdict: If you can get your hands on it, I suggest you try it out. I really want more from this brand. The formula is lovely, the coverage is nice, and I adore this bottle design. If you’re German and you like me, please help me get a few more bottles.

Also, for funsies, here it is with accent nails. The glitter is a Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer one-off prototype with white shapes and blue to purple shift. Oh mama.

Manicure Monday On the Road: Bah Humbug Nublets

I never do holiday-themed nails. Sometimes I want to. I saw them pop up this year right around November, and I love the candy cane nails, the snowfall nails, etc. They’re so friggin’ cute. I love them on other people but I feel weird doing it myself because a) it doesn’t snow in Florida, b) I don’t really celebrate Christmas, and c) I’d already picked out these polishes like months in advance because I’m obsessive and crazy over this stuff.

This week I used Black Mesh from China Glaze, which is the black crackle you see here. I had to use really thin coats of this stuff for it to crackle; I put thicker coats on some nails and it didn’t crackle at all. I had to redo them. I’m wearing Black Mesh over Julep’s Bunny, which was also somewhat of a disappointment. In the bottle, it has this gold shimmer that totally didn’t translate to my nails. I saw it on the pointed cotton swab I’d used to clean up my cuticles, so I know it’s there. It just doesn’t show up on the nail at all. I could have gotten the same look from a white creme polish.

It’s the day before Christmas Eve, and I’m spending it with my mother. Whenever we meet up for the holidays, we always just end up painting our nails together. Here’s an obligatory photo of her chickens.

Manicure Monday On the Road: Birthday Cupcakes

It’s my birthday week, so I’m visiting my boyfriend in Atlanta for the week. Unfortunately, this means I have one photo of my manicure, taken with an iPad. Unfortunately, it means I had to type this blog entry on an iPad as well.

They look kinda melted.

I used a lot of colors in this manicure, as you can see. Here’s a list:

Green: Sally Hansen’s Mint Sprint
Blue: OPI’s Eurso Euro
Pink: P2’s French Kiss
White: Sally Hansen’s Hard to Get
Accent nails: Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Floppy. Hoppy. BUNNIES!

Several days before I left, I packed everything I would need for this manicure. I put all five polishes into a bag with my dotting tool, pointed cotton swabs and acetone, striping tape, tweezers, and whatever else I would need to successfully complete this mani. When I started, I ended up peeling off my old mani, which took off a bit of my natural nail, but it also meant I didn’t disturb my boyfriend’s six housemates with bad acetone smell. Also, since it was a mani with rhinestones, it also meant I didn’t have to go through the kitchen hunting for foil or anything like that. So I’d already started on a bad foot. Then when it was time to start the dotting, the dotting tool wasn’t in my bag. I went through it twice, I looked in other bags several times, and it was nowhere to be found. I ended up making all my dots with the end of an unwound paper clip. It definitely shows. While this isn’t some of my best handpainting, it’s not my worst, either. Actually, it may be my best. I’m awful at handpainting.

So, the polishes. Eurso Euro had a really weird smell, somewhat different from the usual OPI smell. Now that I think about it, I have a dark blue P2 crackle with the same weird smell. Do these dark blue pigments just smell differently, or what? It had really nice coverage, and was easy to work with, but that smell. I can’t get past it. The mint green Sally Hansen is an Insta-Dri, so of course it was opaque in one coat and ready to go right away. I didn’t use the P2 for much, other than the cherry on the top of the cupcake, but it’s probably just as nice to work with.

I think the glitter crelly, Floppy. Hoppy. BUNNIES!, kind of stole the show here. Yes, that’s butterfly glitter you see there, as well as stars in a couple different colors, squares, and hexes. It’s a limited edition polish from Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer, and you only get it by ordering the whole Buffy the Vampire Slayer-inspired collection. Holos aren’t really my style, so they felt bad for me and gave it to me anyway. It’s an excellent polish, and I kind of dislike how exclusive it is, because it’s the best one in the collection, in my opinion.
