Manicure Monday: January Flowers

It’s the first Manicure Monday of 2015! However, I don’t think I’m totally pleased with this mani. It was cuter in my head. I’m wearing three coats of LA Colors’s Daisy, two dabbed coats of Claire’s Hippie Chick on my accent nails, and one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

Daisy is a cheerful yellow creme polish. The first coat was streaky and worrisome, but the color evened out after three coats. The consistency was a bit thick, because apparently my bottle doesn’t close tightly; it just spins around and opens again if you turn it too far. I had to thin it out to make it usable. It dries quickly, I’ll give it that, and takes on a nice satin finish. It’s not bad to use, but it’s not great.

The same is true for Hippie Chick. Hippie Chick is a clear-based glitter topper with lavender and purple flowers and fine iridescent glitters. It looks way cute in the bottle, but there are very few large glitters in it. I spent most of my manicure time fishing them out of the bottle without getting tons of lacquer on the brush. I think it dried pretty quickly, so there’s that.

Forgive my gross dry hands. Winter SUCKS.

I put these two together because I love complementary colors; I thought the purple and yellow would make a much bolder statement than they do. It didn’t occur to me until just now that the polish names work together. That’s fun.

As I said, I don’t feel too jazzed about this manicure. I definitely should have gone with another glitter. It just needs more.

Manicure Monday: Springtime in December

On this Manicure Monday, my manicure is all the things a December mani should not be. Not that I care. Pastels in December are totally cool. It’s warm somewhere. For this spring-forward mani, I’m wearing three coats of Sally Hansen’s No Hard Feelings, two coats of Formula X for Sephora’s Demolition, one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat, and one coat of Hard Candy’s Mattely in Love matte top coat.

No Hard Feelings is a lavender creme polish. It sounds boring, but it’s actually pretty nice. The formula is very nice; it dries in about five minutes, reaches opacity in two coats, and dries with a glossy finish. It’s a lovely color, and I felt a little bad dulling it with the matte top coat.

Demolition is the first Formula X for Sephora polish on the blog. It was also the first Formula X I ever bought; it caught my eye immediately because I thought it was an indie polish. No foolin! I don’t see many mass market glitter toppers like this, especially with hexes this big. Demolition has large hexes in pink and blue, and smaller ones in pink, green, and blue, and even finer ones in the same colors. It’s such a cool look. Of course, with glitter this large, there’s a bit of texture, even after adding top coat, especially since the bigger glitters stuck together and piled up on itself. It still looks awesome.

So in all, not bad. I am still not a fan of matte polish, but I think with the satin glitters, it’s okay. At least it’s colorful.

Swatch Sunday: Cover Girl’s Grapevine

Swatch Sunday!! Cover Girl is the brand we’re looking at today, and this oldie but goodie is called Grapevine. I’m wearing three coats of Grapevine with one coat of Ciate Speed Coat Pro top coat.

The smudge on my index finger is actually a spot where a bit of nail lifted and peeled away. That sounded way less gross before I typed it.

Grapevine is a frosty purple polish. This is a pretty nice formula; the consistency was just right, application was super easy, and it dried quicky and with a satin finish. It’s also really shimmery; I forgot for a second that I wasn’t wearing Fairy Dust over it. It doesn’t look that shimmery in photos, but it’s definitely all there. It’s really nice to wear.

I have had this polish for a really long time. I’m thinking 2008 or so. It’s one of my oldest bottles, but has barely been used. This particular brand and formula have been discontinued, and while there is still a Cover Girl color called Grapevine, it does not appear to be the same. I do not have it, but I should probably buy it and do a comparison.

Final word: Surprisingly sparkly.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s 2014

For today’s Swatch Saturday, I’m wearing a polish made to commemorate the new year. Here I am, wearing it in November. This is Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s 2014, shown at three coats with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

2014 is a blurple polish with a blue-to-purple shift and iridescent glitters. The shift here is very strong, and pops out just about everywhere. The glitters are scarce, and are probably unnecessary with all the shimmer and shift. I like them in there, but I can take or leave them. 2014 dries with a satin finish, and with a very quick drying time. Consistency was ideal and application was very easy.

So let me tell you about this shift. Good lord, this shift. When I say it’s strong, I mean it’s strong, like a stiff drink strong. I can’t stop looking at my nails because they’re a different color every time I look at them. Sometimes they’re emitting this icy blue shimmer, sometimes it’s a vibrant violet. I never know which I’m going to get, but I know it’s always going to be gorgeous.

2014 was released on its own, but also had a companion polish called Resolutions that we’ll see next week.Unfortunately, both are discontinued. Keep your eyes peeled in blog sales, though; this isn’t one you want to let slip by again. If you liked 2014, you might like a currently-available BEGL called Just Admiring Your Skills, Sweetie. It’s more purple than blue, but it also has an unbelievable shift. You should grab that one, too.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Matunda Ya Kwanza

For this week’s Swatch Saturday, I’m wearing an amazing Kwanzaa-themed polish from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer. This is Matunda Ya Kwanza, worn here at three generous coats with two coats of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro.

Matunda ya Kwanza is a light purple jelly filled to the top with glitters of every shape, color, and finish. There are so many kinds of glitter in here that I couldn’t possibly name them all. This is an explosion of color and glitter. The jelly is very light and very transparent, so the glitter from previous coats shows through nicely. It’s like a fine glitter patina on my nails. Naturally, since the jelly is so thin, it’s probably better worn over a light purple polish. It does look excellent that way. Because I wore three coats, it’s a bit thick and I probably should have stuck with two. It looks fantastic either way.

Trivia: The phrase “matunda ya kwanza” is a Swahili phrase meaning “first fruits of the harvest“.

I’ve told you guys about how much I love BEGL glitter toppers, right? They’re just absolutely perfect. The consistency is usually on the thicker side, but that’s because they’re packed with glitter, and no matter how much glitter is in it or how much I blob on, it’s always dry and smooth in a flash. It’s the best.

I admit I didn’t know a lot about Kwanzaa before I got this polish. As much as I feel like a carpetbagger for saying it, I just thought the polish was pretty. The more I read about it, though, the more it’s something I’d like to be a part of. New cultural experiences are such a fun learning opportunity for me. I hope I don’t sound patronizing when I say that.

Manicure Monday: Lilac and Bold Glitter

This week’s edition of Manicure Monday is a little boring, I’m afraid. The glitter accent nails are a bit overdone, but they’re an easy look for when I ignored homework all last week so I could watch The Roosevelts on PBS. The polishes I’m wearing this week are Sinful Colors’s Purple Diamond and Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s Matunda ya Kwanzaa. I have on three coats of Purple Diamond and two coats of Matunda ya Kwanzaa with one coat of Color Club’s clear coat.

Purple Diamond is a lilac with lots of shimmer. The first coat is very sheer, but builds to semi-opacity in one to two coats. It dries pretty quickly and with a really nice shine. With as sheer as this one is, it would work well as a shimmery topper over a darker polish. I’ll totally try that next time. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: two dollar polish has no business being this pretty or high quality. One thing with it, though, is that it reminds me of a blend I made myself called Dusk. It’s the same color and the same shimmer. I’m a little weirded out by how similar they are.

Matunda ya Kwanzaa is described by BEGL as “lightly purple tinted polish with a bright rainbow of glitters in all sorts of shapes and sizes”. That’s as accurate as one can get while being concise. There’s so much glitter in here; every color of the rainbow is represented, as well as some fun shapes; small hexes, dots, and dots are the most prevalent, but I know there are some stars and things as well. The glitter spread evenly, but I didn’t get as much as I wanted in one coat, which is why I used two.

Outdoors, this is pretty bright. The shimmer is much more intense than it appears, and the iridescent glitters pop. It’s gorgeous.

I chose this glitter to go with this polish because I wanted one to balance out the other. Purple Diamond is a bit on the dainty side, and Matunda ya Kwanzaa is bold and colorful. I think the glitter overpowers the rest of the manicure, but that’s okay. Better luck next time.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Cart Jacked by Witches

It’s another discontinued Halloween polish for Swatch Saturday this week! This is the third of four polishes in the Nail Polish Frights collection from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer. This is Cart Jacked by Witches, and I’m wearing three coats with one coat of Color Club’s clear coat.

Cart Jacked by Witches is a purple jelly with various shapes of purple, green, and black glitters. Supposedly there are black holo pumpkin glitters in here, but I didn’t find any. This polish is loaded down with glitter, and so the consistency is quite thick. It could do with some thinner. Despite the thickness, however, it dried quickly. I love BEGL glitter toppers for this reason; there’s never an issue with drying times, no matter how much I glob on.

I like this polish a lot. It doesn’t look much like a Halloween polish, and is versatile enough for year-round wear. Of course, during this time of the year, the purple and green combo is reminiscent of Halloween, but in March, it would just be a polish with a creative color scheme. It may also double as your Mardi Gras polish. If we ignore its holiday theme, it’s a really unique and attractive polish. I like it a lot.

For those who have never shopped online from small businesses, to be cart-jacked is to have an item in your shopping cart be purchased by someone else. It can happen during restocks, when a seller has a limited supply of something. Imagine this: you’ve waited all week for this seller to restock a polish you’ve been dying for. You set four alarms on your phone so you don’t miss it. You sit down and prepare yourself, calming your mind so that your fingers can be quick. The shop opens, you have the polish in your cart, you’re already fantasizing about wearing it, and suddenly, as you check out, there’s a notice that says your item is sold out. You, my dear, have been cart-jacked.

Only one more Halloween BEGL left! After that, we move into Christmas. Like in retail stores, Christmas on this blog is coming much too early.

Manicure Monday: Morning Light/Evening Gradient

I love putting glitter over gradients! My Manicure Monday project this week was to take Morning Light from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer and use it in a fun new way that really shows how versatile it is. I made a gradient with Essie’s Fiji and No More Film, then put on two coats of Morning Light and one coat of Color Club’s clear coat.

I swatched Morning Light way back in January, and I really loved the way it looked over dark polish, but I didn’t want to just wear it over black again, that would be too easy. I went through all of my polishes and after a few misses, chose purple and pink cremes. I wanted a light pink for glitter visibility, but I wanted a darker one to bring out the shimmer. I thought I did pretty well.

I must admit that I’m not too happy with the gradient. I ran out of eyeshadow sponges the other week, so I used one of the hexagonal sponges that came in a China Glaze ombre set. I didn’t really like this method. I didn’t have as much control over the blending and the building of color. I also got polish all over the sides of my fingers and it took forever to clean it up. I will probably not use this method again.

I’m pleased with this look, though. The green shimmer in Morning Light totally transforms No More Film from a deep plum to something lighter and duskier. Also, I noticed something this week that I didn’t when I swatched it: the green shimmer shifts to red! At certain angles, the green disappears and a warm red shimmer takes its place. So cool!

Swatch Saturday: American Apparel’s Andromeda

It’s Swatch Saturday, and I’m wearing the last American Apparel polish I bought on vacation. It’s the only one of them that isn’t a neon. This is Andromeda, and I’m wearing three coats of it with one coat of Seche Vite.

Andromeda is a pretty unique polish; it’s a thin lavender jelly laden with metallic turquoise and iridescent purple glitter shreds. It’s like a purple counterpart to Sinful Colors’s Green Ocean. I decided to wear this polish alone because I wanted to see how opaque the jelly base would get. It’s still quite sheer, and my nail line is still visible, but the glitter covers the nail well.

Unfortunately, application with Andromeda is not easy. The lacquer consistency is very thick and takes quite a while to dry, even with quick-dry top coat. The glitters tend to stick together and clump on the nail, leaving thick bulges in the polish. Also, it doesn’t always sit flat on the nail, so even with top coat, there’s still glitter that sticks up and keeps the polish from being smooth to the touch. It’s beautiful, so I think it’s worth putting up with.

Manicure Monday: Plum and Glitter Surprise

It feels like forever since I’ve done a real Manicure Monday post. For this week, I’m wearing The Golden Age from Sephora by OPI over Essie’s Devil’s Advocate, topped with one coat of Seche Vite.

I really like Devil’s Advocate. Like really. I adore these dark, dramatic, vampy colors because you can never quite tell what color they really are. You can’t tell this is a deep plum unless you look at the very edges of it. If I didn’t know better, I’d assume it’s black. Devil’s Advocate goes on a little thin on the first coat, but evens out to full opacity on the second, and dries with a beautiful shine. It’s really easy to apply.

Unrelated: I put Devil’s Advocate on my toes when I wore Vesper earlier in the month. They’re very similar in color and I really didn’t want to experience the joys of taking Liquid Sand off my toenails.

The real star of this manicure is The Golden Age. It’s a clear glitter topper with various sizes of metallic gold and silver hex glitters. The distinction between the colors is pretty difficult to see in some lighting conditions; in my office it’s impossible to tell, but in the studio and in the sun, it’s clearly visible. It’s also very easy to apply; the consistency is thick so as to accommodate all that glitter. Also, I think this polish has my perfect glitter-to-lacquer ratio: one brushed coat is all I needed for full, even glitter coverage. It’s so easy to work with. I love it.

Sunlight! The sun came out long enough for me to take these photos. The clouds came back when I went inside.

So, there you have it: a glitter topper with secret differently-colored glitters over a black that’s really purple. I love surprises.
