Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Flash Forward Fantasy

As the Valentine’s Day merch pops up in stores, it’s also popping up on blogs, specifically this blog. The next few of Swatch Saturdays are going to cover some of Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s 2014 Valentine’s Day collection, My Indecisive Valentine. The first one I’m going to show you is Flash Forward Fantasy; I’m wearing three coats with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

Flash Forward Fantasy is a sheer nude with iridescent flakies and a gold-to-pink shift. Application was very easy; the consistency was just right, and though the polish is sheer, I had no issues with streaks or patchy coverage. It dries quickly to a matte finish. The shift is very delicate and was hard to capture in photos. It’s a very lovely polish indeed. I love wearing nudes; they’re like mascara for my nails. And dare I say it, this might just be my perfect nude!

I love the BEGL seasonal collections because they’re so loosely based on the occasion. Though this is a Valentine’s-themed collection, most of the polishes reflect this in concept, not in appearance. There’s a glitter topper with heart glitter in it, obviously (we’ll see this next week), as well as a pink and a red, but those polishes were not the favorites from the collection. The best ones were the unconventional ones, like the blue (blue in a Valentine’s collection, how striking!), the nude, and the orchid holo (which I was not lucky enough to get).

As this collection was from last year, it’s been discontinued. A few bottles from the collection do still linger in the BEGL shop, but not this particular one. Sorry!

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer Prototype PCFS 1.0

Happy new year, readers! My first mani of the year is a Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer prototype. I’m wearing one coat of PCFS 1.0 over China Glaze’s Pelican Gray, Julep’s Martha, and Essie’s Mint Candy Apple, as well as a coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

PCFS 1.0 is a clear glitter topper with glitters in matte white, royal blue, pink, and holographic turquoise. Shapes include pink hearts, holographic turquoise stars and shreds, white rectangles and dots. There are also some iridescent glitters. Most of the glitters spread out evenly; rectangles and shreds came out easily, but the hearts and stars eluded me. Regardless, I still got a fun look and good glitter coverage. Drying times were fast. Application was easy. This was a pretty nice polish to use and wear.

Because this is a prototype with a prototypey name, I gave it a nickname: RETROLOVE. I don’t know why it’s all caps, but it is. These colors together just scream Miami Vice to me.

As this is a prototype, it’s a one-of-a-kind polish and there aren’t anymore in existence. Sorry! The BEGL shop will reopen on the ninth of January, with a new winter collection launching on the 12th.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Newborn Solstice Sun

First Swatch Saturday with nubs! For this Saturday, I’m wearing another Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer holiday limited edition called Newborn Solstice Sun, made to celebrate Yule. I’m wearing three coats of Newborn Solstice Sun with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

Newborn Solstice Sun is a garnet jelly polish with silver and red holographic microglitters. The jelly is quite dark, but the glitters shine through easily. In very bright light, you can see all the way through the jelly and see the bottom layer of glitter; in lower light, it’s murky, and though the glitter isn’t as defined, the shine is still there. Application was smooth and easy; the polish dried very quickly, in about five minutes, and with a matte textured finish. As you can see, it’s still bumpy, even with a layer of top coat. I thought about adding another, but didn’t want to risk shrinking or pulling. It could definitely use another.

While Yule has many traditions rooted in early Germanic paganism, this polish takes its name from Wicca tradition. Yule celebrates the Horned God, who is reborn as the new Sun God on the winter solstice.

This is the last of the BEGL holiday limited editions. There’s actually a Hanukkah-themed polish that is absolutely gorgeous, and it’s the only one of them I don’t have. Like the others, it’s been discontinued and is no longer available in the BEGL shop. A shame, really.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Tacky Winter Sweater

For this Swatch Saturday, we’re looking at a selection from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s 2013 Winter collection. I’m wearing Tacky Winter Sweater at three coats with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

BEGL describes Tacky Winter Sweater as “light pink based polish with sapphire hexes, holo violet hexes, and holo bright pink hexes, diamonds, and dots, purple iridescent hexes, and light pink snowflakes”. It’s somewhere between a jelly and crelly; it’s creamy, but still very sheer, and all the glitters show nicely through. Application was very easy; the glitters spread well over the nail, and the sheer base gives even and streak-free coverage. Drying times were fantastic; I had no problem with dents or smudges. My one issue is that I couldn’t get any snowflakes. I really tried; I stood the bottle upside-down, I shook the bejeezus out of it, and I got one that ended up on my right hand. They’re all just hanging around the walls of the bottle, mocking me.

This was definitely my favorite from the BEGL winter collection. None of the polishes in that set were overtly holiday-themed, but this one was definitely the most unconventional of them all. Also, I admit that I went for this one first because it was pink. It’s so unlike a winter polish, but it’s no less festive or shiny than its wintry counterparts.

Unfortunately, you just missed out on buying one of these for yourself. While this was my favorite from the collection, it was not the favorite of anyone else, and it sat neglected in the BEGL shop for a year before it finally sold out last week. When it came up in the queue, I thought “Yes, I’ll finally be swatching something that’s actually still for sale.” I’m sad I didn’t get to say that, but I am happy it finally sold out.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s MIL-Induced Mimosas

Swatch Saturday is here again! We’re looking at a beauty called MIL-Induced Mimosas. Last autumn, Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer released a Thanksgiving-themed duo. Here’s half of that duo. I’m wearing three coats of MIL-Induced Mimosas with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro.

MIL-Induced Mimosas is a golden yellow with red shimmer. The polish itself is on the sheer side, and definitely required three coats for full opacity. A fourth might even do it some good. It dries very quickly, and with a semi-glossy finish. It was very easy to apply and clean up. The shimmers stand out very well.

I really love this polish. I love that it’s inspired by insufferable relatives and holiday stress, by that slender glass full of fizzy relief, by the calm and courage only champagne and orange juice can bring. Even though it has an autumn theme, this polish could be worn any time of year, especially in the summer. It’s a vivid, sunny, cheerful color, which is kind of funny considering mothers-in-law do not have that effect on people.

One little detail I absolutely adore about this polish: it is exactly the same color as a mimosa! Painting with my nails with this polish made me want a mimosa, so I made one; lo and behold, it is exactly the same color as orange juice. I don’t know how Julie, the mastermind of BEGL, pulled this off. I am blown away that it is just the right shade of orange juice yellow. It is simply incredible.

As I said, MIL-Induced Mimosas was part of a fall duo; Turkey Coma, a festive fall glitter topper, was also available. Unfortunately, I do not have Turkey Coma. Also, MIL-Induced Mimosas is discontinued, which is sad for you. If you like yellows, though, you may want to check out Intersecting Lines in the Sand from BEGL’s summer collection. It’s not a perfect dupe for a mimosa (I made another mimosa, just to check), but it’s definitely my favorite from that particular collection.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Prototype AG 1.1

Today’s Swatch Saturday polish is no stranger! We took a brief look at Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s Prototype AG 1.1 on Manicure Monday, when I paired it with China Glaze’s Exotic Encounters. Today, it gets its own manicure! I’m wearing AG 1.1 over Raspberry Cordial from Ciate, and Black Out and Hard to Get, both from Sally Hansen. All nails are topped with one coat of Speed Coat Pro, also from Ciate.

Prototype AG 1.1, as we discussed before, is a glitter topper with blue-to-purple shifting pigment and white hexes, stars, moons, squares, rectangles, dots, and diamonds. As I mentioned before, the consistency is rather thick, but because there’s so much stuff in this bottle, it’s natural for it to be that way. Despite its viscosity, it does dry quickly, and with a satin finish. The glitter does spread well over the nail, but because the glitters are so large, they do tend to clump a little bit.

How gorgeous is this! I included a before shot of the black, white, and pink, just so you can see how this polish transforms a color. These are some pretty basic cremes in pretty bold shades. The shifting pigment comes along and softens them, making them pearly and delicate. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s probably the most beautiful the darker colors; on the black, you can see everything, like looking up at the sky on a dark night. You get the maximum shifting effect as well as glitter contrast.

You probably think I’m crazy to put a polish like this over white. Yeah, maybe I am, but I really love the way it turned out. The glitters are not immediately visible, but the shift looks incredible. I am a huge fan of this color-on-color combination. It’s intricate and dainty, like tatted lace. I think it’s astoundingly beautiful.

While this is a statement polish for sure, I also feel like it’s very simple as well. There aren’t a ton of colors competing for attention, there isn’t a crazy sparkly melange of glitter. Everything is consistent and and homogeneous, and I like that about it. It’s elegant without being over the top; it demands attention but isn’t loud or obnoxious. It is truly stunning. Unfortunately, this is a one-of-a-kind polish prototype and is currently unavailable. Sorry! In the BEGL shop, however, there is one OOAK prototype for sale. Grab it before it’s gone!

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Resolutions

It’s Swatch Saturday again! Today, I’m bringing you the second part of Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s new year’s duo. Released early this year, 2014 and Resolutions were released alongside their winter collection. We saw 2014 last week, so today we’re looking at Resolutions. I’m wearing one light coat of Resolutions over Sally Hansen’s Hard to Get, Julep’s Martha, and China Glaze’s Pelican Gray, as well as one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

Resolutions is a glitter topper with primarily black and blue dots and hexes, as well as icy blue shimmer. There are a few colorful surprises: lime green diamonds, white blocks, black stars, purples, yellows, corals. I put on a very light coat, and I didn’t get a lot of the big colorful glitters. They’re kind of hard to fish out, and tend to hang out at the bottom of the bottle. A second coat would definitely have helped me out, and probably would have helped me get those big pink dots and hexes. Those are my favorites.

As always, this is a dream to wear and apply. I could have used a little more glitter on the brush, but that’s not too much of a worry. The base dries fast, and surprisingly, the glitter is flat and smooth on the nail, which rarely happens with polishes like this. Even the big glitters are glassy smooth. It’s nice.

Unfortunately, this is long discontinued, but a few of my favoritest BEGL glitter toppers are actually on sale in the BEGL store. If you liked this one, I think you’ll love those.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s 2014

For today’s Swatch Saturday, I’m wearing a polish made to commemorate the new year. Here I am, wearing it in November. This is Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer‘s 2014, shown at three coats with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

2014 is a blurple polish with a blue-to-purple shift and iridescent glitters. The shift here is very strong, and pops out just about everywhere. The glitters are scarce, and are probably unnecessary with all the shimmer and shift. I like them in there, but I can take or leave them. 2014 dries with a satin finish, and with a very quick drying time. Consistency was ideal and application was very easy.

So let me tell you about this shift. Good lord, this shift. When I say it’s strong, I mean it’s strong, like a stiff drink strong. I can’t stop looking at my nails because they’re a different color every time I look at them. Sometimes they’re emitting this icy blue shimmer, sometimes it’s a vibrant violet. I never know which I’m going to get, but I know it’s always going to be gorgeous.

2014 was released on its own, but also had a companion polish called Resolutions that we’ll see next week.Unfortunately, both are discontinued. Keep your eyes peeled in blog sales, though; this isn’t one you want to let slip by again. If you liked 2014, you might like a currently-available BEGL called Just Admiring Your Skills, Sweetie. It’s more purple than blue, but it also has an unbelievable shift. You should grab that one, too.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Electric Icicle

It’s another wintry delight this Swatch Saturday! Today we’re looking at the second half of the winter duo Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer released last year. We saw and loved Untrodden Snow; let’s have a look at Electric Icicle. I’m wearing two coats of Electric Icicle over Sally Hansen’s Hard to Get, Essie’s Marathin, and Julep’s Dianna, as well as one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro.

Electric Icicle is a clear glitter topper made with “bright blue holo hexes, rainbow iridecent hexes and squares, silver holo hexes and tiny diamonds, and blue holo stars”. I wore two coats because the all the good shape glitters were hanging around toward the bottom of the bottle, and my first coat was a bit thin on the glitter. Application was pretty easy apart from that; the glitters spread well and didn’t clump. The base dried quickly. I had no problems with it.

I gotta say, this might be the best winter glitter topper I have. I’ve got a few that have icy blue glitters with silver, and even though they’re very pretty and they shine a great deal, they don’t have a whole lot of color. Electric Icicle is the best of both worlds. The metallic and holo textures of the glitters — especially the silvers — give the look some iciness, but the blue and iridescent glitters give it a lot of color as well. This is a mix that is all about winter, but doesn’t let winter bring it down. It’s amazing.

I nearly swatched this on the pink and blue I used on Wednesday, Mint Candy Apple from Essie and Martha from Julep. They’re really soft but bright colors that make the perfect base for any glitter topper. I was afraid that it would look like the same mani two days in a row, so I went with Marathin from Essie and Dianna from Julep. I chose Dianna because I wanted the blues to be kind of homogeneous, and since Dianna is a dusty color, obviously a dusty rose would complement it. I almost feel like I should have chosen gray over white, but the glitter looks so perfect over white that I’m glad I didn’t.

Swatch Saturday: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer’s Untrodden Snow

It’s the first Swatch Saturday in November! I’m wearing a wintry white from Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer called Untrodden Snow. This is three coats with one coat of Ciate’s Speed Coat Pro top coat.

Untrodden Snow is a white polish with icy blue shimmer. I achieved a good opacity with it at three coats; I still don’t feel like it’s fully opaque, but I still got really good coverage. The first coat was really soft and sheer, thinly but evenly. The shimmer didn’t capture so well in the studio, but it’s actually very potent. Drying time was quick and cleanup was easy. Polish dried semi-glossy. It was very easy to work with.

This is a really dainty white. Lots of whites look like wall paint or Wite-Out on the nail, and thankfully this is not one of them. I almost wanted just to leave the first coat by itself, because it was so sheer and delicate. I’d recommend two coats with this, I think, so as to maintain the softness but still have lots of coverage. The blue shimmer adds even more softness and gives it just the right amount of sparkle to make this polish sparkly and unique.

It almost feels weird even wearing this polish in the sunshine. I almost expected it to melt! It looks great in direct sunlight. For some reason, though, it looks like it’s leaning more toward cream than white.

When this polish was available, it was only sold as part of a duo. The other polish, Electric Icicle, is my swatch for next week.
